Can Music Improve Positive Company Culture?

Short answer? Yes. Absolutely. 100%.

Want proof? Let’s talk about my daughter’s soccer team (man I hope she doesn’t see this, don’t use it against me). They flippin' stinketh!  Like, constantly get their ass kicked by kids two years younger, stink. On a positive note, the last two games they started playing music during warm-ups. Did they suddenly turn into Liverpool FC? Nope. They still lost the last two games. BUT… they played with way more energy, more fire, and more heart. The vibe

was different and you could see they were having more fun.

Sports without music and sound effects makes me sleepy.  Take away the music, the chants, the hype tracks, and suddenly, even the most intense game feels kinda... meh. Music raises the vibe—so why wouldn’t we use it in business?

Back when I was a CEO, we had a fun tradition. Everyday we had a morning huddle (highly recommend), a different person was in charge of picking a music video to play before we kicked off the agenda. It wasn’t just about having tunes; it set the tone for the day. It gave people a lift before diving into work. And honestly? It made a huge difference in morale.

Want to bring that energy into your workplace?

Here are five easy ways to do it:

  1. Before and After Meetings: Assign a Meeting DJ to pick the track that sets the mood. Whether it’s a hype song to get people going or a chill vibe to wind things down, music will shape the energy of your meetings.  Music makes meetings suck less!

  1. Play Music While Waiting for People on Zoom Calls: Awkward silence? No thanks. Let people vibe while they log in. Bonus tip: Put "Zoom DJ" on the meeting agenda so someone’s always in charge of the playlist.  Have a competition to guess the song and artist. If the meeting doesn’t have an agenda, shout, “No agenda, no attenda!”

  1. Let Employees Play Music Before Opening and After Closing: If you have a storefront, let your team crank some tunes before and after hours. It’s a simple way to boost morale and start (or end) the shift on a high note.  If you manage these folks take the lead and then let your team show off their playlists before the public starts yelling at them.

  1. Encourage Music While Working (When It Makes Sense): Studies show that music improves focus and reduces anxiety (sources below). So, if your workplace allows it, let employees use earbuds to play their favorite tunes while they work—maybe skip the death metal?

  1. Use Original Music to Kick Off Big Meetings or Events: Want to take it to the next level? Start your quarterly meetings or company offsites with an original song or even a fun rap about what’s coming up. Sounds crazy? That’s the point. The best leaders get vulnerable and step outside of their comfort zone to provide a little fun and inspiration for their team.

And here is my plug, if you really want to boost the company vibe…  Hire a DJ. Whether it’s for a company party, a product launch, or a big team event, having a DJ bring the right energy can make all the difference.
